With our lives becoming busier and busier every day, making the time for joy feels like a far-off dream. But it’s not. You—yes, YOU—have the power to make room for more joy. If the very thought of making room for more in your life makes you panic, this post was written for you!
For the next few minutes, we’re going to do a little spring cleaning on your mindset. Turn off notifications and take this time to focus on how you can live a happier, more fulfilling life by creating room for joy.
Stop Putting Off Your Own Happiness
Do any of these phrases sound familiar?
“I’ll do _____ when I lose these last 10 pounds.”
“When COVID is over, I’ll start _____.”
“I’ll have more time for _____ when the kids go back to school.”
“I’ll reward myself when _____.”
This is the sound of putting off your own happiness, and it’s got to stop. Yes, there are times when A has to happen before B can start, but too many times, we make excuses and keep putting off the things we want to do because we get caught up in the crazy busy.
You don’t have to wait to be happy.
You can do the things that bring you joy while being a successful woman and while having a fulfilling social and family life. You have to start by making your happiness a priority. When you catch yourself putting off happiness, I want you to write down five reasons you overcome this supposed obstacle and then take action.
Don’t Let Worry Overtake Joy
When things don’t go as expected, we all have a default reaction that allows us to fall into autopilot mode. For many of us, that’s worry. We can get so caught up in the “what-ifs” that we get stuck and can’t move past these toxic thoughts.
To get unstuck, you need to start challenging these thoughts when they take over. Sure, the worst-case scenario could happen, but how is this serving you?
Turn your worry into a more productive practice. When you begin to worry, write down what it is you’re worried about and shift gears into problem-solving mode. You may not come up with the perfect solution, but you can find an answer that allows you to take action.
When you learn to control your worrying thoughts, you can make more room in your consciousness and life for doing the things you want to do.
Practice Gratitude Every Day
In my 8-week coaching program, one of the first shifts we make is to embrace gratitude. Creating a gratitude practice allows you to feel more empowered and to appreciate the world around you.
Being grateful for the blessings in your life, as well as future blessings, shifts your focus from feeling stuck to feeling joy. But more than that, it can boost your immune system, improve your sleep, and open your heart to more optimistic feelings overall.
When you’re healthy, well-rested, and more optimistic, you’ll be more successful at work, at home, and everywhere in between. It’s incredible to experience the difference gratitude can make in your life!
Make the Time for Fun
You’re crazy busy at work, managing your home, and possibly even caring for a family. Finding time to do things outside of these major responsibilities can be challenging, but it can be done. You have to prioritize!
Taking time for fun can reduce your stress, boost your energy, and even improve your memory. It strengthens your connection with others and makes you better equipped to cope with life’s stressors.
Fun doesn’t have to be spontaneous. I challenge you to schedule time for enjoyment at least once a week. Whether you go for a bike ride, get in touch with your artistic side, or schedule a girls’ night out, this time is your time, and it’s well deserved.
Let Go of Limiting Beliefs
Limiting beliefs are those thoughts that creep into your subconscious, the ones that tell you you’re not good enough, that everyone is against you, and that you’ll never succeed. They are holding you back from achieving your goals and finding happiness. They’re a safe space. Safety and comfort don’t result in progress.
The problem with these limiting beliefs is that they can be self-fulfilling prophecies if you don’t get a handle on them. The good news is that you have the power to change these beliefs. When you give power to these limitations, they can consume all the joy in your life.
Remember that these are beliefs, and they’re not actually true. When you pivot from a limiting belief to a more empowered way of thinking, you can take different actions. For example, instead of thinking that you can’t get a promotion because everyone you’re going up against is better than you, try this: “I’m going to get this promotion because of my qualifications, education, and the obstacles I’ve overcome—none of the other candidates have achieved the same things I have, so my experience is unique.”
When you can make this change, you can undo the old way of thinking and make room for an entirely new outlook.
Creating more joy in your life takes some work at first, but you’ve got this! Tackle one step at a time, and don’t let the process overwhelm you. Be mindful of the changes you’re making, and remind yourself along the way why you’re making them. Soon, you’ll find that you’ve adopted new ways of thinking and behaving and have room in your heart and your life for more joy.
My 8-week program Dream Big, Revise Often empowers you to embrace new ways of thinking so you can overcome the negative self-talk and rock your success and your life. Sign up for my free master class below!
